| Typography 2012 Art direction by Jonathan Barnbrook |
Page 1 is an unusual typographic experiment in which 70 different graphic designers have responded to the same brief: to layout the first page of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Each design is accompanied by commentary that offers insight into the designer’s decision-making. Chosen to ensure as expansive a range of outcomes as possible, our contributors are an international bunch, united by enthusiasm but indisputably individuals when it comes to experience and design pre-occupation. Previewed here are the designs from Apfel, Experimental Jetset, Winterhouse, Studio Frith, Judith Schalansky and Spin. More contributors will be announced soon. |
A much loved and frequently retold story on television and in film, Great Expectations was first published in book form in 1861 and has never been out of print. Designed and produced as a classic paperback, Page 1 will be published to mark the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth. This first GraphicDesign& title is designed to encourage greater consideration of the relationship between typography, layout and the reading of a book. | next previous |
